WAU, June 6th – A tribunal military court martial in Western Bahr el Ghazal has dismissed at least nine South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) officers after they were convicted of grave offences such as Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), murder, and misconduct on Saturday, July 5th.
The tribunal, deployed by the SSPDF’s Military Justice Directorate with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), heard over 20 cases involving murder, SGBV, and misconduct, according to Radio Miraya.
Two soldiers were sentenced to seven and ten years for SGBV-related crimes, while a civilian received a 2-year sentence for killing two soldiers and was ordered to pay blood compensation.
During the closure, and as part of reforms, the SSPDF launched ‘Six Key Messages to End Sexual Violence’ to reinforce discipline and end impunity.
The court marks a significant step in promoting accountability and restoring public trust in the armed forces.
