Rwanda and DRC sign peace agreement.
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement aimed at ending decades of conflict in eastern Congo.
The deal, facilitated with support from Qatar, includes provisions for disarmament, territorial integrity, and the reintegration of non-state armed groups.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump, emphasized the deal’s significance for regional stability and U.S. access to Congo’s vast mineral reserves.
While hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough, analysts and local voices caution that the exclusion of key armed groups like M23 and the lack of accountability measures may limit the deal’s effectiveness in achieving lasting peace.
The agreement also highlights growing U.S.–China competition for critical minerals in Africa.
