ISWAP attack kills 5 Cameroonian soldiers

Military sources in Cameroon say four Cameroonian soldiers have been killed and one seriously injured by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Fotokol, a town in the far north of the country.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in the destruction of the entire military post and two vehicles, all of which were set on fire.

Military weapons were also reportedly stolen. The suspected militants are said to have used drones and other advanced weaponry, consistent with a sophistication of their tactics in recent months.

ISWAP claimed responsibility for the attack less than 24 hours after it took place. The military has increasingly become a target of the terrorist group, with more than 20 Cameroonian soldiers killed in the last three months in similar attacks suspected to have been carried out by ISWAP and Boko Haram jihadists.
